Abstract

Scaling and root planing (SRP) is a fundamental non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease aimed at removing plaque, tartar, and bacterial toxins from the surfaces of teeth and below the gumline. This procedure is essential for preventing the progression of periodontal disease, a condition that, if untreated, can lead to tooth loss and other systemic health complications. While SRP is typically performed by dental hygienists and dentists, its effectiveness is enhanced when approached collaboratively, with input from other healthcare professionals such as medical doctors and dental specialists. This article explores the collaborative approaches to scaling and root planing, focusing on the roles of dental hygienists, dentists, periodontists, and medical professionals in treating periodontal disease. It highlights the importance of teamwork, patient education, and individualized care in optimizing outcomes for patients with periodontal disease.
