Abstract

The role of medical nurses in the labor operating theatre (OT) has evolved significantly, paralleling advancements in healthcare, technology, and professional nursing practices. Historically confined to supportive roles, nurses now serve as pivotal members of the multidisciplinary team, contributing to maternal and neonatal safety and well-being. This article explores the evolution of nurses' roles in labor OT, emphasizing their expanded scope of responsibilities in preoperative, intraoperative, and postoperative care. It highlights the integration of advanced technologies, such as fetal monitoring systems and surgical robotics, which demand technical proficiency and continuous education.


Additionally, the article delves into the critical role of nurses as patient advocates and providers of emotional support, helping to alleviate maternal anxiety and improve childbirth experiences. Challenges faced by labor OT nurses, including workforce shortages, burnout, resource constraints, and regional disparities, are examined. Furthermore, global variations in nursing practices are discussed, comparing high-income countries with low- and middle-income regions.


The article underscores the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, leadership roles, and future trends such as telemedicine and artificial intelligence. Recommendations are provided for enhancing nursing effectiveness through policy reforms, education, and technology integration. This comprehensive analysis affirms the indispensable role of medical nurses in labor OT, advocating for continued investment in their professional development to ensure optimal outcomes in maternal and neonatal care worldwide.
