Abstract

The onus for remaining attentive to the needs of patients is on every staff member, so they must continually be reminded of their imperative role in the patient care experience  They must – in every possible interaction – condition themselves to see the healthcare delivery system through the eyes of patients, challenging themselves to evaluate their conduct from the patient perspective. Moreover, being ever-mindful of the environments in which patient interactions occur, they must do everything possible to ensure that they are conducive to positive experiences. As healthcare performance indicators continue to influence the financial viability of healthcare delivery systems, it becomes even more critical that staff members be sensitive to every aspect of the patient care experience. Executives can help staff members to remain attentive by encouraging as much consideration of the patient perspective as possible. On an ongoing basis, staff members must be encouraged to look inward and observe their conduct as patients might.
