Abstract

This paper examines the vital role that lighting plays in affecting students' attention, behavior, and overall academic success, focusing specifically on English as a Second Language (ESL) classrooms. Research underscores the notable influence of brightness and color temperature on students' concentration and emotional state. Bright, cooler color temperature lighting promotes alertness and reading skills, whereas insufficient lighting can cause eye fatigue and decreased focus. ESL students, who need heightened concentration due to the complexities of learning a new language, are particularly impacted by subpar lighting. Lighting that is natural or full-spectrum, which imitates daylight, enhances mood, cognitive functioning, and academic performance. Suggestions for improving lighting in ESL classrooms involve utilizing full-spectrum lights, reducing glare, adding natural light, and offering adjustable lighting solutions. Improving lighting conditions can foster more effective educational environments, leading to better results for ESL learners.
