Abstract

Gender roles significantly shape individual beliefs, behaviours, and relational patterns. This systematic review explores how gender roles influence relationship expectations and power dynamics in intimate relationships. A comprehensive search of peer-reviewed literature published between 2000 and 2024 was conducted using databases such as PsycINFO, Scopus, and Google Scholar. A total of 36 studies were included based on defined inclusion criteria. Findings suggest that traditional gender roles are closely associated with asymmetrical power dynamics and stereotypical expectations in romantic relationships. Conversely, egalitarian views are positively linked with mutual respect, shared decision-making, and emotional intimacy. The study highlights the evolving nature of gender roles and suggests directions for future research and intervention.
