Abstract

Health Information Management (HIM) is a cornerstone of modern healthcare systems, particularly in countries undergoing rapid transformation such as Saudi Arabia. As hospitals expand their services and adopt advanced digital health technologies, the role of HIM professionals becomes increasingly vital in ensuring accurate documentation, secure information flow, effective data governance, and high-quality patient care. This paper examines the critical importance of Health Information Management in enhancing hospital performance, supporting clinical decision-making, improving patient safety, and meeting national healthcare transformation goals under Saudi Vision 2030. The study explores the responsibilities of HIM specialists, the evolution of health information systems in the Kingdom, challenges facing the profession, and the growing demand for data-driven decision-making in healthcare. Findings emphasize the indispensable role of HIM departments in medical coding, health statistics, electronic health records (EHRs), privacy management, performance indicators, insurance processing, and quality improvement. Strengthening HIM capabilities is essential for advancing patient safety, supporting accreditation standards, improving hospital efficiency, and building a sustainable, data-driven healthcare ecosystem in Saudi Arabia.
