Pharmacist Involvement in Antimicrobial Stewardship Programs
Main Article Content
Abstract
Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) is a rapidly escalating global health threat that compromises the effectiveness of standard treatments and increases healthcare costs, morbidity, and mortality. Antimicrobial stewardship programs (ASPs) are structured interventions designed to optimize antimicrobial use and combat resistance. Pharmacists play a pivotal role in ASPs due to their expertise in pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and medication management. This paper explores the expanded role of pharmacists in antimicrobial stewardship programs, highlighting their clinical, educational, and administrative contributions. It also examines the impact of pharmacist-led stewardship on patient outcomes, antimicrobial resistance patterns, and healthcare costs, as well as challenges and future opportunities for strengthening pharmacist involvement.
