Abstract

Background: Allied health professionals constitute a critical component of modern healthcare delivery systems, particularly in rapidly developing nations like the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. As the country pursues its Vision 2030 healthcare transformation goals, understanding the contribution of allied health specialties to patient safety and healthcare outcomes becomes increasingly important.


Objective: This paper examines the multifaceted roles of allied health professionals in Saudi Arabia's healthcare system, analyzing their impact on patient safety, quality of care, and overall health outcomes. The review explores current challenges, opportunities, and strategic recommendations for optimizing allied health workforce integration within the Saudi healthcare framework.


Methods: This comprehensive review synthesizes evidence from peer-reviewed literature, Saudi Ministry of Health reports, international healthcare standards, and quality improvement studies focusing on allied health contributions to patient safety and healthcare outcomes in Saudi Arabia and comparable healthcare systems.


Results: Allied health professionals significantly enhance patient safety through specialized interventions in medication management, rehabilitation services, diagnostic accuracy, infection control, and nutritional support. Evidence demonstrates measurable improvements in patient outcomes, reduced hospital readmissions, decreased adverse events, and enhanced quality of life when allied health services are properly integrated into care pathways.


Conclusion: Strategic investment in allied health workforce development, interprofessional collaboration, and evidence-based practice implementation represents a vital pathway for Saudi Arabia to achieve its healthcare quality and safety objectives. Recommendations include enhanced professional regulation, expanded educational programs, integrated care models, and robust quality measurement systems.
